Rampant Veteran Suicides in Florida: The Whitewashed Connection

Would you be given to believe that the exceptionally high suicide death rates amongst some of our most deserving, the veterans in Florida, are just a mere accident or more than that?

According to the VA, Florida has the highest ratio of veterans to the general population nationwide. At 6.5%, Florida stands out with 1.4 million veterans.

Considering that the suicide death rates amongst veterans is alarmingly 2.6 times higher than the general population raises a flag of warning and alert. The chances are that 40 out of every 100,000 veterans might turn to suicide.

There are a large range of studies over the past decade that have confirmed the direct impact of psychiatrist drugs/antidepressants to suicidal ideation, increased suicidal tendencies and higher suicide death rates. Despite the initial publishing of these studies over a decade ago, little to no action has been taken within the psychiatric community and many of the governmental agencies to curb the use of these drugs or enforce broad dissemination of information on the findings.

It begs the question: Why?

Shocking findings that impact our veterans

As early as in 2007 the FDA admitted that the antidepressants are dangerous and called out for their monitoring: “All patients being treated with antidepressants for any indication should be monitored appropriately and observed closely for clinical worsening, suicidality, and unusual changes in behavior, especially during the initial few months of a course of drug therapy, or at times of dose changes, either increases or decreases.”

The FDA considered antidepressants so worrisome that they warned and required daily watching of the patients by both families and caregivers: “Families and caregivers of patients should be advised to look for the emergence of such symptoms on a day-to-day basis, since changes may be abrupt.”

The Echo of Truth

But it is not only the FDA that issued such findings, studies after studies have shown that antidepressants are directly linked to and cause higher suicide death rates. Especially troublesome are the details that emerged that the risk is higher in children, teenagers, and young adults.

Even coming home to psychiatric circles, various communities have confirmed in their own findings that the suicidal ideation is the most significant predictor of suicide within any 30 to 365 days of evaluation.

Systematic reviews and aggregated studies through experiments and observations have investigated and confirmed that suicidal ideation is worsened by antidepressant, and categorically by SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors).

Most online health related information sites will suggest that that the antidepressants have the specific side-effects of:

  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Attempts at suicide

The real Connection to veteran suicide rates

When individuals are prescribed antidepressants to counter some form of depression, the psychiatric and the antidepressant drug industries might blame the connection between the depression and the potential suicide.

However, in many cases the antidepressants are prescribed to people, including our veterans, for other more common symptoms such as anxiety and other behavioral issues. Studies have shown that the antidepressants have brought about suicidal ideation and tendencies even if the person was not previously disposed to having these concerns.

In fact, research findings have shown evidence that those who were taking antidepressants could be at an even higher risk of suicide attempts than those whose depression is easing for other reasons.

The Whitewash and the Continued Push for Antidepressants

Despite the findings and studies in prominent psychiatric publications, the prescription drive continues through one of two primary observed approaches:

  1. The urging of psychiatric prescription is often veiled under the guise of precautionary guidelines. The approach is simply to ask for caution but continue!
  2. A more insidious approach has been the blurring of research findings or simply stating that findings might be contradictory despite the abundance of valid clinic trials that have conclusively confirmed these findings.

We are then left to assume that the psychiatric and antidepressant drug industry does not place the personal wellbeing of our veterans at the forefront of their work.
